"Mastering others is strength; mastering oneself is true power" - Lao Tzu

Have you ever taken the time to truly understand yourself? What motivates your actions? Why is this self-awareness crucial as you embark on a path of self-improvement or change? These are fundamental questions to contemplate, whether your goals are modest or ambitious. For example, are you considering a career shift? How do factors like finances, family, workplace flexibility, time off, and organizational culture align with your core values? Initiating a new fitness or weight loss regimen? What are you willing to sacrifice without compromising your values to attain your specific objectives?

For me, starting each day with a morning run is more than just exercise; it's a cornerstone that helps me stay focused and channel my energy towards those I serve – be it clients, family, or friends. I've come to realize that if I neglect this routine, the foundations of my life begin to tremble. Equally important is being present for my family, supporting my children’s physical and mental growth and being completely present for my wife. If I step into a role where both are hindered, it's a recipe for unfulfillment and potential failure. While these are just a few of the driving forces in my life, I know that keeping them at the forefront empowers me to lead a purposeful existence, both professionally and personally.

In my coaching practice, I'm consistently astounded by how often my clients circle back to their core values and what truly fuels their work. This is why I require my clients to embark on a thorough introspection before we dive into our collaborative journey. Why? Because I understand that their aspirations will ultimately be guided by their values. It's akin to possessing a superpower, and witnessing this transformation unfold is immensely gratifying.

My clients frequently reflect on how their decisions align with their values. Admittedly, sometimes this reflection process can be challenging, as it may not yield immediate gratification. However, when they ultimately arrive at a conclusion that is in harmony with their values, the transformation is profound. This is when I typically witness sustainable growth and change propelled by my client's unwavering commitment.

So, how can you take the first steps towards this inner work? Begin by identifying who or what holds genuine importance in your life. Clarify your values. Then, delve into what truly ignites your passion. Uncertain about your true passions? Consider examining how you spend the majority of your free time – what brings you joy and aligns with your values? A great coach can partner with you to unearth what truly drives you.

Some may dismiss this process as impractical, but is it truly? I firmly believe that each of us possesses the power to allow our values to steer us towards our desired destinations and shape our identities. It demands courage, heart, and tenacity to embark on this journey, but if you persevere, it has the potential to revolutionize your life in ways you never imagined possible. Repeat after me, "I commit, I will not quit!"
