"Play to your strengths. If you aren’t great at something, do more of what you’re great at." -Jason Lemkin
This week marked the beginning of my collaboration with an elementary school in the Austin area, delving into their Professional Learning Communities (PLC) process. The aim is to deepen this practice school-wide, align it cohesively, and devise a sustainable long-term plan. During my engagement, the commitment and passion of the educators were palpable, reflecting a profound dedication to student success and high expectations. Witnessing their efforts was truly inspirational.
My extensive educational background, including a doctorate in school improvement and 18 years in education serving diverse communities, equips me with the confidence, passion, and love needed for this undertaking. I express immense respect for educators, recognizing the incredible work they do, regardless of the school context. Their profession embodies a lifelong commitment to the greater good. I firmly believe that thriving, supported, and well-funded schools contribute to flourishing communities. Amidst factors we cannot control, my dedication is centered on focusing supremely on what we can control.
Yesterday, as I conveyed this dedication and passion, I felt a natural acceptance from the team of teacher leaders. Coaching is a pivotal element in this scenario, differentiating my approach from other consulting firms offering similar professional development. Unlike traditional "sit and get" learning experiences, my facilitation sessions demand active participation, with participants engaging at least 75% of the time. This aligns with the PLC process philosophy that learning is most effective when individuals actively engage in the work.
The coaching aspect ensures long-term growth. In this specific instance, after discussions with the principal and teacher leaders, it was decided that I would continue coaching the principal and teacher leaders on a monthly basis. This ongoing support is crucial, providing a resource for my clients and reinforcing the idea that I am working for them. Monthly check-ins allow me to tailor support for each team, ensuring they progress toward our intended outcome – a thriving PLC model driven by teachers.
The coaching approach is equally valuable for the principal, recognizing the myriad priorities they juggle. My sessions rely on the wealth of their knowledge, with deep and reflective questioning aimed at addressing significant challenges during the change process collaboratively.
In conveying my enthusiasm for the growth observed in this blog, I must emphasize how thrilled I am to closely collaborate with these educators over the coming months. Their knowledge and wisdom position them to navigate sustainable change, irrespective of staff turnover. While the journey ahead demands courage, follow-through, and time, the combination of consulting and coaching emerges as a powerful tandem for fostering long-term success in our schools. I see this as a significant key to effective school improvement, and though I continue to learn, I am confident in unlocking this pathway.

What a lucky school to be able to work with you on this area for which you possess so much expertise and use such rich and reflective processes to engage with them.
